Accelerated Reader
We use Accelerated Reader from Year 2 at Hayward's. We find that children love quizzing on their books and seeing their word counts and points.
Children are set a points target based on their reading ability, personal to them, and they are given a ZPD which indicates to them a range of books that is suitable for them.
The children also love working towards their certificates:
-
Ready Reader
The student must accumulate five points on books Read To, Read With and/or Read Independently. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Independent Reader
The student must read three books with a 1.2 or higher ATOS book level (or 160L Lexile® Measure) and accumulate ten points. Only books Read Independently count toward the three-book target; however, books Read To, Read With or Read Independently for this level count toward point accumulation. When a student achieves this certification, teacher approval is needed. Students cannot re-certify at this level; Independent Reader status is achieved only once.
-
Rising Reader
The student must read three books with a 1.6 or higher ATOS book level (or 250L Lexile® Measure) and accumulate 10 points on books at any level. Only books Read Independently count toward the three-book target and point accumulation. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Super Reader
The student must read three books with a 2.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 330L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least one point. Only books Read Independently count toward certification. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Advanced Reader
The student must read three books with a 3.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 510L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least two points. Only books Read Independently count toward certification. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Star Reader
The student must read three books with a 4.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 660L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least four points. Only books Read Independently count toward certification. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Classic Reader
The student must read three books with a 6.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 900L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least seven points. Only books Read Independently count toward certification. We recommend that a student re-certify no more than five times at this level.
-
Honours Reader (not tracked in AR)
The student must independently read books from a special list of challenging literature (created by teachers and librarians), and accumulate 100 points from the quizzes. The program will score and track the quizzes the student takes; the teacher must manually track everything else for this certification level.
We have created an Honours Reader list. Please find it attached.
