SEND
Hayward’s is committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all our pupils, whatever their needs. We aim to create an environment where there is support for the child and family, so that they can progress in their learning and develop in self-confidence.
Throughout each year, pupil progress is assessed and monitored and support will be put in place for children not managing to achieve or make adequate progress. We work closely with families to ensure effective support can be provided. Additional support might be accessed through outside agencies. Any support provided will be documented on a provision map and details of the support will be shared with you.
We work closely with a range of outside agencies. These include: our school Nurse, Education and Family Support advisor, Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Behaviour Support, Occupational Therapists, Hearing and Visual Impairment Advisory Teachers and an English as an additional language (EAL) advisory teacher. Alongside supporting the school staff through training in specialist areas, they are a great support to families.
We are proud to have a highly skilled team of teaching assistants who support the children. They help ensure that every child in the school reaches their full potential. Many run intervention groups such as speech and language, Fun Fit and motor skills groups. We have two pastoral teaching assistants who provide a range of interventions for children including Forest school and Nurture support. Both are trained THRIVE practitioners (who are able to support children with emotional and social difficulties).
The person responsible for managing Hayward’s provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is our Inclusion Lead Clare Bedford. She holds the National SEND qualification required for a teacher to be a SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator) in school. If you have any concern about provision, in the first instance we encourage you to contact your child’s class teacher. If have still have concerns then please contact either the Clare Bedford or the Headteacher, Andy Smith. In the unlikely event that your concern is not resolved then please contact our chair of Governors.
Clare Bedford can be contacted through the school office - office@haywards.devon.sch.uk or by contacting the school on 01363 772970.

Devon SEND Local Offer
A local offer gives children and young people, aged 0-25, with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families information to help them find the right help and support in their area. Its two main purposes are to:
- provide clear, comprehensive and accessible information about the support and opportunities that are available
- make provision more responsive to local needs
Devon’s SEND Local Offer brings together information around local education, health and care services, as well as other support available (either locally or nationally) that you may find helpful, in one place. It covers:
- education – support in early years, schools and college, including transport
- health – specialist clinics, support and advice for children and young people with medical needs
- social care – support for personal care and practical assistance, short breaks and personal budgets
- transitions – moving between phases of education and preparing for adulthood
- education, health and care (EHC) plans – the statutory EHCP process explained, including applying for a plan, transfers and reviews
- information, advice and support – where to get impartial and confidential information, advice and support
More information about the SEND Local Offer can be found here.
Devon Local Area SEND Strategy
Devon has set out a clear vision and public commitment to change our culture and practice to improve experiences and outcomes for children and young people, and their families, in Devon.
Their SEND Strategy 2024 to 2027 is informed by the information we’ve gathered over the last two years from engagement activities with families, schools and other key partners across the local area, alongside a range of data.
